Jobs and the Economy
In these tough economic times, we need our state government focused on attracting quality, high-paying jobs. I’ve been working alongside hard working folks the past fifteen years. To get Missourians back to work we need a commitment to economic development, college affordability, and job-training programs. I will work with Governor Nixon and representatives from both Parties to support the kind of smart, common sense economic policies we need.
Fiscal Responsibility
At a time when states across the country are facing major budget shortfalls, Missouri must be a leader by finding ways to eliminate wasteful spending. Just like families across the state, my family has had to rework our budget, even cancel some vacation plans during this economic downturn. It is time for the state to do the same. We can cut costs and streamline government by utilizing practical tools, like technology integration or information sharing. The era of writing blank checks to inefficient and ineffective government programs must come to an end.
Health Insurance
Health care costs are skyrocketing and are damaging to our economy. With insurance premiums doubling over just the last few years alone, businesses are struggling to cover the costs of providing health coverage to their employees. We need real, bipartisan action to lower health care costs by increasing competition and holding insurance companies accountable.
Education
The long-term future of Missouri's economic health depends on what we do today to improve our schools. With my own three children, Samantha, Jack and Joe all going through the public school system right here in the 55th district, I will be a strong supporter of education in our state. We need engaged teachers and modern technology in every Missouri classroom. I believe these are things we can do, but only if we make smart investments and follow through to make sure every dollar gets where it's supposed to go. And just like a recession is no time to raise taxes, now is definitely not the time to raise college tuition costs that are already higher than ever.
